Lorry, bus and coach drivers across the country can now apply and pay for their tachograph cards online in minutes thanks to a new digital service launched by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).
Around 780,000 driver tachograph card holders will be able to use the new online tool, which is the first DVLA digital service to move fully onto its secure cloud-based system. While drivers can still choose to fill out a paper application and send it in the post, the Agency has pointed out that the online service is both quicker and easier.
As well as being available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, it means that drivers should have their new tachograph card issued within 24 hours of applying compared to 10 days or more when posting their paper applications.
To use the new service, drivers will need a valid GB photocard driving licence and after applying, they will receive an email notification confirming their application and can choose to be updated on its progress by text message.
DVLA Chief Executive Julie Lennard said: “We are delighted to launch our new online driver tachograph service. This quick and easy to use service will give drivers who need tachograph cards greater flexibility around how, when and where they transact with us, and they will get their new card back even quicker.”
